Driving Performance is designed to monitor fuel efficiency, truck usage and performance, as well as, miles driven. This program has been implemented through involvement in the Saskatchewan EEMV provincial agreement, FleetSmart, and the state-of-the-art driver simulator.
Siemens Transportation Group Inc.'s long-standing corporate policy has been to maintain speeds of 100 km/hr or the posted speed, whichever is the lowest number. Their company owned power units are governed at a top speed of 105km ensuring speed is controlled. This has helped contribute to the Company's overall fuel economy.
Siemens Transportation Group Inc. has become a registered participant of FleetSmart, a new governmental initiative put in place to help trucking companies reduce their fuel consumption and the amount of greenhouse gas emissions their fleets release. FleetSmart also offers trucking companies SmartDriver for Highway Trucker training, which promotes energy efficiency as a cost-effective and responsible way to cut costs and reduce the environmental impact of their operations.
Siemens Transportation Group Inc. was certified with SmartWay on October 24, 2007. SmartWay is a program that combines the environmental goals of reducing carbon (CO2), Nitrogen Oxide (NOx), and particulate matter (PM) emissions with the industry's goals of reducing fuel use, saving money, and improving efficiency. It is a part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is a model that collects and calculates carbon inventory and efficiency information from all freight modes. The agency recognizes Siemens Transportation Group for committing to improve the environmental performance of their freight operations.
Siemens Transportation Group Inc.’s acquisition of the driver simulator has contributed to the strong record of environmental and safety responsibility. Training on the simulator will save approximately eight hours in fuel consumption, or 75 gallons in fuel for a single tractor-trailer and 92 gallons for a Turnpike double. In addition, drivers are placed in a variety of driving scenarios, including mountain roads and suburban settings, with a diverse possibility of challenges. The simulator allows drivers to review and correct any errors to avoid making the same errors on the road.
The Company has been able to reduce the number of miles driven by over 2.7 million miles and has recognized a greenhouse gas emissions savings of more than 1,984 tons. In addition, the Company has managed to cut fuel consumption by over 171,711 gallons.
